Coda /t/ Glottalization in 20 & 50 Year Old American Women

چکیده

Realization of coda /t/ in American English is sensitive to segmental and prosodic context, as well as speaker age. One 20 year old and three 50 year old American women read an extensive word list designed to pinpoint some effects of context. For the older women, preceding low vowels conditioned more glottalization of /t/, presumably because of the greater effort involved in making an oral closure from a low tongue position. Even intervocalically, the four speakers produced some glottal /t/s, where flapping would be expected. The older speakers nearly always glottalized /t/ preceding /p, t, m, n, l, r, w, j/ and sometimes before /k, f, , s/. Segmental conditioning was practically irrelevant to the younger speaker who dependably released coda /t/ only utterance-finally. For her, the glottal variant is common enough that the flap is in danger of being replaced as the basic intervocalic allophone.

Coda glottalization in American English

Glottalization of coda /t, p/ is a common process in American English. This study uses acoustic measures to determine when coda glottalization occurs in the conversational speech of the Buckeye Corpus. Vowels preceding coda /t, p/ tokens for 40 speakers were analyzed using H1*–H2*, an acoustic correlate of glottal constriction. Results indicate that coda glottalization is more common before a s...

Acoustic Differences Between English /t/ Glottalization and Phrasal Creak

In American English, the presence of creaky voice can derive from distinct linguistic processes, including phrasal creak (prolonged irregular voicing, often at edges of prosodic phrases) and coda /t/ glottalization (when the alveolar closure for syllablefinal /t/ is replaced by or produced simultaneously with glottal constriction). Previous work has shown that listeners can differentiate words ...

The benefits of vowel laryngealization on the perception of coda stops in English

It has been previously noted that voiceless coda stops in English may undergo optional glottalization, i.e. they are produced with simultaneous glottal closure. The glottal closure usually produces laryngeal coarticulation on the previous vowel in the form of laryngealization (creaky voice). In this paper, the effects of vowel laryngealization on coda stop perception were investigated. Eighteen...

Glottalization and Taiwan Min checked tone sound change

This study investigates the glottalization of Taiwan Min checked tones with CV[p, t, k, ʔ] syllable structures. The results of Electroglottography (EGG) and acoustic measures showed that above 80% of [ʔ] and below 15% of [p, t, k] were deleted. Codas were most often realized as energy damping during the vowel final portion. Full stop closures were observed significantly more often among Tone 3 ...

Raddoppiamento Sintattico and Glottalization Phenomena in Italian: a First Phonetic Excursus

This paper is a preliminary phonetic exploration of aspects of the well-known Italian sandhi phenomenon of Raddoppiamento sintattico (henceforth RS), which involves the gemination of word-initial consonants under certain conditions, eg dei [k]ani ‘‘some dogs’’ but tre [kk]ani ‘‘three dogs’’. It is often assumed that RS C-gemination is regular, but there is increasing evidence that it competes w...
